Abhishek Anand leads Inclusive Finance and Banking Practice in Asia. He is a microfinance and banking expert and has over 9 years of experience gained through projects with banks, MFIs and financial cooperatives in India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Myanmar and Afghanistan.

Abhishek has experience of managing large projects and leading multi-country teams. From October 2012 to September 2012, he was appointed as the Country Manager for MicroSave, Indonesia. He has good experience in project management as well as in technical assistance delivery. He has worked on developing strategy and strengthening delivery systems, designing and developing policies and processes to improve efficiency and overall sustainability. He also has good experience in social performance management and client protection, human resource management for organisational development. 

Some of his recent projects include:

  • Opportunity International Australia (OIA) / Dia-Vikas Capital Pvt. Ltd: Leading advisory services to 12 financial institutions in India on risk management, product development, strategic business planning, internal audit and control, human resource management;
  • Opportunity Kauswagan Bank in the Philippines: advising on strategy, implementation of workflow management system, back-office management systems;
  • Equity Bank in Kenya: developing strategic business plan for cashless distribution business of Equity bank for five years (2015-19).
  • CRDB Bank and CRDB MFSC: Conducting annual and semi-annual project evaluation of Integrated Microfinance Wholesale and Retail Banking project funded by Financial Sector Deepening Trust, Tanzania. 
  • Rabobank Foundation and Cordaid in Indonesia: working as team leader in an MFI strengthening project covering 6 small banks, 2 NBFIs and 7 cooperatives, with an overall mandate to develop fast growing and stable microfinance institutions in Indonesia;
  • RBS Foundation India: assisting 15 MFIs improve their operations and outreach through work on strategic business planning, process analysis, operations & HR manuals, internal audit & controls, financial accounting and ratio analysis and governance;
  • BMT Sanama: conducting SPM assessment to understand the current levels of social performance and to come up with an SPM focussed action plan for the institution. 


Prior to joining MicroSave, Abhishek worked for Grameen Financial Service (Grameen Koota) as a Division Manager responsible for the North Karnataka division where he expanded portfolio operations. He also worked for ACCESS Development Services as a microfinance expert for 3.5 years, where he assisted MoFAD, a microfinance company based in Kabul, under a major international assignment in Afghanistan funded by CARE International to strengthen its systems. He has a Post Graduate Diploma in Forestry Management from the Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal.
