Sunil Bhat is a Senior Manager in MicroSave’s Digital Finance Services - Payments & Distribution domain. He is a financial sector consultant with over five years of experience advising more than 40 financial institutions in India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malawi, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Philippines. His areas of expertise include: Responsible finance, social performance management, agri insurance, microinsurance, risk management, financial due diligence, strategic business planning, financial analysis, individual microfinance lending and qualitative market research.
 
Some recent projects include:
  • Regulatory and insurance review for KMBI in the Philippines funded by funded by Opportunity International Australia: Studying various legal options available for KMBI and suggesting the most suitable option. (2014)
  • Evaluation of the SERP social insurance programme in India funded by SERP: Conducting field visits, holding discussion with the clients and preparing a case study to highlight the impact of insurance services under IKP. (2014)
  • Study on responsible finance practices by MFIs in India, funded by SIDBI: Conducting secondary research on the code of conduct assessment reports of the MFIs. (2014)
  • Consumer protection risk research in Bangladesh, funded by CGAP:  Conducting the qualitative research in Bangladesh and overseeing the quantitative and qualitative research. (2014)
  • Design a client complaints mechanism in the Philippines for TSPI funded by Opportunity International Australia, 2014: Presented the best practices of CCM from across the globe; Study the conditions- intent, culture, resources – of TSPI which enabled to design an effective CCM. (2014)
  • Scanning of the impact of health microinsurance schemes on adolescent girls in India, funded by Opportunity International: Studying the micro health insurance programmes of cooperatives, insurers, insurance companies, NGOs and MFIs across India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. (2011-12)
 
Other projects include: working on a toolkit on digital financial services for microfinance institutions, designing of warehouse receipt financing for an Indian microfinance organisation, conducting social performance assessments in two countries as a part of the in the SPMIP project for Michael and Susan Dell Foundation; development of risk management toolkit and delivering risk management training for Standard Chartered Bank; conducting process mapping and risk analysis and preparing associated operational manuals for nascent Indian MFIs under an RBS Foundation India programme; conducting loan portfolio audit for Dia Vikas; conducting due diligence of two microfinance organisations to facilitate investment decisions for social investors; secondary desk research on microinsurance products for Opportunity International; IFC research to study the barriers in delivering microinsurance services to the poor in Bihar and Rajasthan.
 
Before joining MicroSave, Sunil worked for Centrum Capital, Mumbai, in the Corporate Finance Division. Sunil has an MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai and a B.Tech from the National Institute of Technology in Calicut.
