Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)

Universal, affordable, and sustainable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is a key issue that hinders international development. The WASH sector requires additional capital at multiple levels, which includes utilities, WASH SMEs, community programs, and household installations. However, financial institutions struggle to understand the sector. MSC’s advisory work in WASH includes sector assessments and policy reviews. We conduct monitoring, evaluations, and impact assessments to strengthen the effectiveness and sustainability of WASH programs.

We support the design of effective service delivery processes, develop tailored financial products, and embed gender mainstreaming in WASH services.

We also create practical toolkits and deliver capacity-building support to WASH service providers to enhance WASH practices across the value chain.

Our approach is structured around the following

Policy

  • We engage water supply and sanitation actors to develop effective policy and regulation.

Market strategies

  • We develop market strategies for WASH suppliers in low-income urban and remote areas.

Strategy reviews

  • We conduct reviews, impact evaluations, and baseline surveys of WASH projects.

Product development

  • We develop financial products for financial service providers.

Capacity building

  • We develop toolkits and training modules for financial institutions and WASH SMEs.

Innovation and digitalization

  • We advise on the integration of smart technologies for efficiency and financial performance.
