Climate change and sustainability

Climate change overview

Climate change, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss are among today’s most pressing challenges. To address these issues, MSC integrates climate change and sustainability considerations into the design principles of our development interventions. Our vision is to drive universal financial, social, and economic inclusion for all.

We intend to enable climate action for an inclusive world by offering advisory services grounded in locally-led approaches and digital solutions. We collaborate with climate actors in the public and private sectors to deliver impactful outcomes.

MSC’s work spans supply and demand dimensions. Our efforts emphasize the importance of behavioral change and capacity building among vulnerable communities to build resilience and enable adaptation to climate change.

Our approach is structured around six transformative areas:

Agriculture and food

  • We support smallholder farmers with climate-resilient practices and technologies.
  • We promote carbon-smart farming and connect farmers to carbon markets.
  • We strive toward greening agricultural supply chains for sustainability.

Energy systems

  • We expand access to renewable energy for livelihoods.
  • We scale electric vehicles (EVs) to enhance mobility and reduce emissions.

MSMEs

  • We enable resilience through financial inclusion.
  • We support green transitions and sustainable pathways for MSMEs.
  • We accelerate climate and AgriTech startups through strategic assistance.

Disaster risk reduction

  • We strengthen early warning systems and risk-reduction mechanisms.
  • We enhance community preparedness for disaster management.

Health, nutrition, and WASH

  • We facilitate access to climate-resilient water supply and sanitation systems.
  • We bolster public health responses to climate-related disasters.
  • We enhance resilience to climate-induced health risks.

Ecosystems and biodiversity

  • We drive conservation and restoration through innovative financial instruments.
  • We implement nature-based solutions for climate adaptation.

We use our expertise in financial inclusion, catalytic finance, and product development to deliver solutions that promote resilience and advance low-carbon development. Our work also spans capacity building, risk and assurance, digital technologies, and institutional development. MSC serves as co-chairs of critical working groups within the CIFAR Alliance and managers of the Climate Resilient Agriculture – Virtual Club (CRAgVC). The CRAgVC initiative serves as a global virtual platform for catalytic change-makers to work together and create pathways for transformative changes in smallholder farmers’ climate adaptation and resilience. We empower the AgriTech sector through our thought leadership and innovation at the intersection of climate action and sustainable development.
