Job Description

This role offers a rare opportunity to shape and scale market-led agriculture at system level in Bihar, working at the intersection of FPCs, organized markets, and private sector buyers under a flagship program. As Senior Agri Lead – Markets & Trading, you will translate market intelligence into real trades, repeat buyer relationships, and commercially viable farmer enterprises, influencing how smallholder agriculture engages with modern supply chains. The position combines hands-on market execution, strategic buyer engagement, and enterprise building—ideal for a senior agri-markets professional looking to apply deep trading and value-chain expertise to a program with scale, visibility, and long-term impact.

Job Responsibilities:

The Senior Agri Lead – Markets, Trading & Private Sector Partnerships will be responsible for the following:

Market Linkages, Trading & Price Discovery:
  • Design and support implementation of structured trading mechanisms for FPCs, including aggregation, grading, quality assaying, warehousing, logistics, and payment systems.
  • Facilitate FPC participation in organized markets, digital trading platforms, and institutional procurement channels, as appropriate.
  • Support price discovery, negotiation, and contract structuring with buyers to improve price realization and reduce volatility.
  • Assist in putting in place suitable risk mitigation mechanisms, including advance payments, buyer-linked assurances, and quality-based pricing.

Private Sector Partnerships & Commercial Engagement:
  • Identify and engage private sector buyers, processors, agri-tech platforms, and institutional market participants.
  • Support formalization of MoUs, supply agreements, and trading partnerships with private sector entities.
  • Work towards strengthening repeat and scalable commercial relationships for participating FPCs.

FPC Business Development & Enterprise Strengthening:

  • Support FPC Boards and management teams in strengthening market-facing and enterprise-oriented operations.
  • Guide FPCs on business planning, crop and commodity prioritization, cost structures, margin analysis, and working capital planning.

Finance, Working Capital & Trade Enablement:

  • Coordinate with financial institutions to facilitate working capital and trade finance aligned with trading cycles.

Monitoring, Reporting & Knowledge Management:

  • Ensure regular monitoring and reporting of market linkage and trading-related performance indicators.
  • Support documentation of learnings, case studies, and scalable market linkage models.

Team Management & Communication:
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to district and zonal teams on market linkage and buyer engagement activities.
  • Maintain effective communication with program leadership and key stakeholders on progress, risks, and emerging opportunities.

Requirements

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Educational Qualifications: Postgraduate degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Economics, or Rural Management from a reputed institution.
  • Extensive Experience: 10–15 years of relevant professional experience in agri-markets, agribusiness, commodity trading, value chain development, or FPC/FPO-led enterprises.
  • Demonstrated experience in structured trading, buyer engagement, price discovery mechanisms, and market risk management.
  • Experience working with commodity exchanges, trading platforms, processors, aggregators, agri-tech firms, or institutional buyers is preferred.
  • Experience in government, donor, or CSR-funded agriculture programs with a market-oriented approach is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of physical commodity markets, agri-input and output value chains, and post-harvest management systems.
  • Exposure to price risk management approaches, digital trading platforms, and market-linked finance.
  • Familiarity with Bihar’s agricultural context and the FPC/FPO ecosystem.
  • Communication Excellence: Outstanding English writing and presentation skills.
  • Team Collaboration: Experience working in multi-cultural, cross-functional teams.
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are essential.
