About the role
The Assistant Manager – Agriculture & Food Systems will support business development and lead high-quality delivery of consulting and technical assistance assignments across Africa. This role is ideal for a driven professional with strong analytical skills, client engagement experience, and a passion for strengthening agriculture and food systems.
The role involves close collaboration with governments, donors, development partners, financial institutions, agribusinesses, and NGOs, and requires flexibility to spend 40–50% of time on field-based assignments.
Key Responsibilities
Lead or support the planning and delivery of medium-to-large technical assistance assignments in agriculture and food systems.
Provide high-quality technical and advisory support to diverse clients, ensuring excellence in delivery, timelines, and outputs
Manage assignment set-up, coordination, stakeholder engagement, and debriefing
Oversee and contribute to data analysis, research, report writing, and presentation of findings
Review and support development of training materials, toolkits, research studies, and technical products
Contribute to strengthening MSC’s agriculture and food systems methodologies and tools
Lead and support business development initiatives aligned with the Agriculture & Food Systems Practice.
Build and nurture strong relationships with existing and prospective clients and partners
Identify new opportunities and contribute to concept notes, proposals, and bids
Represent MSC at sector conferences, workshops, and forums
Contribute to marketing and visibility efforts through blogs, thought pieces, and digital engagement
Identify key lessons, innovations, and best practices from projects across geographies
Develop and publish knowledge products such as blogs, case studies, briefing notes, and focus notes
Support internal learning through documentation, presentations, and knowledge-sharing sessions
Support and mentor junior staff to ensure quality delivery and professional growth
Participate in post-assignment quality reviews and feedback processes
Foster a collaborative team culture while upholding MSC’s values, reputation, and standards
Take ownership of continuous learning and professional development
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
3 + years of relevant professional experience in agriculture, food systems, or related sectors
Master’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Agricultural Economics, Sustainable Agriculture, Public Policy, or a related field
Demonstrated experience in agricultural consulting, rural development, livestock management, and/or public policy engagements
Strong client engagement, relationship management, and business development capabilities
Excellent planning, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills across diverse contexts
Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and sound decision-making abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Willingness and ability to travel extensively for field-based assignments
