Gender equality, disability, and social inclusion (GEDSI)

The GEDSI team at MSC is committed to advancing gender equality, disability inclusion, and social equity across the globe. We work with governments, development partners, and private organizations to integrate gender and inclusion across policies, programs, and service delivery systems. We work to ensure that women, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups are empowered to access opportunities and resources equitably.

Our global interdisciplinary team offers research, advisory, and technical assistance to design, implement, and evaluate inclusive programs and policies across Asia and Africa. We apply a gender lens to every stage of program development, to shape inclusive products and services, address systemic barriers, and build tools grounded in gender-disaggregated data and lived experiences.

We prioritize both institutional transformation and individual empowerment. Our work spans inclusive financial systems, climate resilience, social protection, and women’s economic empowerment, focused on fostering dignity, agency, and lasting change.

Our mission is to promote gender equality and social inclusion across all sectors.
Our vision is a world where women, people with disabilities, and marginalized communities thrive with fair, responsive, and inclusive systems.

Thematic focus areas of MSC’s GEDSI Practice

Women’s economic empowerment and Financial Inclusion (WEE-FI)proach

  • We strengthen gender-inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystems by addressing systemic barriers and expanding women’s access to finance, markets, networks, and institutional support.
  • We promote inclusive financial solutions by working with financial service providers, FinTechs, and agent networks to design and scale affordable, gender-intentional products tailored to women’s needs.
  • We generate evidence to drive action through rigorous research on women’s access to credit, enterprise growth, digital risks, and financial behavior to inform data-backed policies and program design.
  • We support policy and ecosystem transformation. We pilot innovations, institutionalize proven models, and enable cross-sector partnerships that create scalable impact for women’s economic empowerment.

Disability inclusion

  • We apply an intersectional GEDSI lens to understand how gender, disability, and other identities shape access, agency, and economic opportunity.
  • We promote disability-inclusive financial systems by supporting financial service providers to embed universal design and inclusive practices across products, service delivery, and operations.
  • We leverage data to inform inclusive design by generating insights on the experiences and needs of persons with disabilities and apply these to drive equitable, evidence-based solutions and inclusive designs.

Gender responsive agriculture and food systems

  • We empower women in agriculture and aquaculture by strengthening their economic participation, enhancing their decision-making power, and improving access to productive resources.
  • We facilitate women farmers’ access to inclusive financial mechanisms, climate-adaptive technologies, and sustainable agricultural markets.
  • We promote gender-equitable food systems by integrating women’s priorities and contributions in climate adaptation strategies, agri-value chain development, and food security programs.

Care economy

  • We strengthen the care economy by identifying critical gaps in care infrastructure, financing, and workforce conditions to inform targeted, evidence-based interventions.
  • We collaborate with ecosystem actors to promote investment in care infrastructure, services, and entrepreneurship models that create dignified work for women and others.
  • We work toward long-term systemic change by supporting policy, ecosystem, and institutional solutions that recognize and value care work, especially by women.

Women in the digital economy

  • We help women participate in the digital economy. We improve their access to and user experience of digital financial services and platforms through inclusive design and behavioral interventions.
  • We support inclusive digital public infrastructure development and services that address barriers faced by women, especially in rural and low-income settings.
  • We build the digital capabilities of women entrepreneurs and workers through tailored skilling, mentorship, and market linkage interventions.

Gender lens investing

  • We support investors and ecosystem enablers to apply a gender lens across investment processes, from pipeline development to impact measurement.
  • We generate evidence on the business case and social returns of investing in women-led businesses and gender-inclusive enterprises.

Prevention of Gender-based Violence (GBV)

  • We address gender-based violence as a barrier to economic empowerment by recognizing its impact on women’s mobility, agency, and participation in livelihoods and public life.
  • We strengthen systems of prevention and response by supporting frontline institutions—such as police, social protection, and health services—to adopt survivor-centered, gender-responsive approaches.
  • We enable community-level norm change through social and behavior change communication (SBCC), engaging men, boys, and gatekeepers to shift attitudes that normalize or justify violence.
  • We generate evidence to inform policy and practice by researching the linkages between GBV, economic insecurity, and structural inequality, and using insights to shape integrated, cross-sector solutions.

Gender and climate change

  • We strengthen women’s leadership in climate-resilient food systems by enabling access to climate-smart technologies, finance, and inputs for women farmers and producers.
  • We co-create inclusive climate solutions by designing advisories and digital tools that reflect women’s needs, roles, and decision-making contexts in adaptation and resilience-building.
  • We support women-led climate enterprises by facilitating access to finance, mentorship, and markets—amplifying their role in driving inclusive, locally rooted climate innovation.

Intersectional areas (Gender responsive infrastructure, transportation, gender, and technology)

  • We work at the intersection of gender and systems, such as infrastructure, transportation, and technology, to identify barriers and co-create inclusive, gender-responsive solutions.
